Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Carlton Palmer has claimed that the club's signing of Alex Mowatt is great business, during a recent interview with This is Futbol.

The experienced midfield player recently joined the Baggies as a free agent after rejecting the offer of a new contract at Barnsley and will now be looking to make another strong impact under Valerien Ismael at the Hawthorns after being a standout performer at Oakwell last term.

Mowatt notched up an impressive eight goals and seven assists as Barnsley came close to achieving an unlikely promotion, before Ismael and the former Leeds United man decided to swap Yorkshire for the Midlands this summer.

Speaking on the signing recently, Palmer had this to say on the matter:

"It’s good business. It’s great business.

"I know that Barnsley were going to make him the highest-paid player in their history to stay.

"That’s a fantastic signing for the football club, it really is."

In the end Mowatt departed Oakwell after making 162 appearances for the Tykes and will be sorely missed by his old side who will now be looking to go again next season.

Meanwhile Ismael and Mowatt will be looking to go one better and achieve promotion together with Albion.

The Verdict

I have to agree with Palmer on this one, I think Mowatt moving to West Brom could be one of the signings of the summer in the Sky Bet Championship.

He showed last season just how effective he can be and by playing in a stronger team in the shape of the Baggies. he could well get another promotion on his CV.

Ismael will expect him to bring goals and creativity to the midfield as he did at Barnsley and there will be a lot of pressure on Mowatt to perform as well as he did last term.

Overall I can see this signing turning out for the best in the case of Albion and I really think he can drive them on to bigger and better things in the future.
