Former Sheffield Wednesday player Carlton Palmer has told Transfer Tavern that he thinks the club need to win promotion to have any chance of signing Bailey Peacock-Farrell permanently.

The Northern Ireland international is currently on loan at Hillsborough from Premier League Burnley and has already impressed for the Owls, keeping four clean sheets in his opening six league games in the Steel City.

Given that he is still aged just 24, Peacock-Farrell is very young in goalkeeping terms and could be a player that Wednesday look to sign on a permanent deal moving forwards if he continues to impress, particularly with his game time likely to be limited at Burnley due to the presence of Nick Pope.

Now Palmer has discussed the possibility of his former club doing a deal, as he made the following claim on the matter:

"They've got a season-long loan for him. I doubt for one minute – he's an international – that he's going to sign for a club in League One.

"For Wednesday to have any chance of signing him, they've got to get promoted at least back to the Championship."

Peacock-Farrell originally joined Burnley back in the summer of 2019 from Leeds United and has since gone on to only make eight appearances for the Clarets in over two years.

The talented shot stopper currently has three years remaining on his contract at Turf Moor, which suggests that the top flight side do view him as a good prospect for the future.

The Verdict

Peacock-Farrell has settled into life at Hillsborough very well so far and is fully deserving of the plaudits coming his way.

He is sure to be a player that the club would love to sign on a permanent deal but it just wouldn't be an agreement that could be reached easily.

As long as the Owls are in League One, the more likely it is that the keeper will want to play at a higher level.

Add to the fact that he still also has plenty of years left to run on his contract with Burnley and it would be easy to assume that this would be a very costly transfer for Wednesday to pursue further down the line.
