Will Vaulks will be hoping to play a vital role for Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the new League One campaign, with the level of ambition set to remain high at Hillsborough.

Conducting some good early business, Darren Moore's side will now be setting their sights on their first league game of the season at the end of this month, a home fixture against Portsmouth.

The Owls fended off Championship interest to lure the midfielder to their Yorkshire home earlier in the window, something that makes his addition that little bit more impressive.

Speaking to Football League World about Vaulks, and the potential partnership he could strike with Barry Bannan, Carlton Palmer said: "He had lots of interest from Championship clubs, so I expect him to start with Bannan in midfield.

"And, I would say that is probably the best duo in League one to start off with.

"He's a durable player. He plays a lot of games - very consistent performer. So I'm expecting him to have a really, really big season for Sheffield Wednesday next year."

The verdict

Vaulks next to Bannan in the midfield next season is an exciting prospect for Owls fans, with the loss of Massimo Luongo not set to be as noticeable following the 28-year-old's arrival.

A gritty, determined midfielder, who shows excellent levels of tenacity and intelligence, there is certainly scope for Vaulks to thrive at Hillsborough.

Bannan and Vaulks will complement each other too, and if you add someone like George Byers into the equation too, then that adds even more glamour to that position.

League One can be a relentless division meaning competition levels need to be as high as they possibly can, with Vaulks' arrival certainly doing that.
