Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer has urged Darren Moore to get a deal for 24-year-old winger Josh Sims over the line, in an interview with The Transfer Tavern.

Sims has entered discussions with the Owls over a possible move to Hillsborough according to Yorkshire Live, with the winger being released from Southampton this summer after graduating through their youth system.

He showed a huge amount of promise on the south-coast in his earlier playing days, making 27 senior appearances for the Saints with the majority of these displays coming in the Premier League.

But with the Englishman failing to establish himself as a regular at St Mary's, he was sent out on a season-long loan to Reading during the 2018/19 campaign, where he struggled to secure regular game time ahead of the likes of Modou Barrow and Garath McCleary.

This move to Berkshire seemed to have stalled his career and he also failed to make any real impact at New York Red Bulls during the following season, before going out on a third temporary move to Doncaster Rovers last term.

He joined the Keepmoat Stadium when Darren Moore was still boss, impressing under the 47-year-old and recording a respectable eight assists in 28 League One appearances, scoring one goal in the process.

Despite moving on to Hillsborough in March this year, the current Sheffield Wednesday boss has kept tabs on the winger and could make him his tenth signing of the transfer window.

One man who wants to see this deal happen is former Owls player Carlton Palmer, who gave his thoughts on this subject in an interview with The Transfer Tavern, saying: "If they manage to get it over the line, I think it’s a good signing.

"He (Sims) worked with Darren (Moore) at Doncaster, so the fact he’s worked with Darren, understands the way Darren works and wants to play and enjoyed it, I think it would be another good acquisition by the football club if they can get that one over the line."

The Verdict:

Although he failed to make a substantial impact at Reading or the New York Red Bulls, Sims has the potential to be a real threat in the third tier and Darren Moore seemed to unlock that at the Keepmoat Stadium last season.

Sheffield Wednesday would be the ideal destination for the winger, giving him another season to prove himself in League One and if things go well for the South Yorkshire side during the next year, it could potentially hand him a second chance in the Championship.

After seeing Adam Reach and Kadeem Harris leave the club on the expiration of their contracts this summer, the Owls need to add another signing or two to their wide area even with Olamide Shodipo coming in on loan and this would be a cheap option to pursue.

And with the number of signings they're currently making, keeping an eye on their financial situation will be important. Sims is one player who is more than likely to provide value for money.
