Tom Lees has signed for Huddersfield Town as a free-agent having left Sheffield Wednesday after seven years of service at Hillsborough.

Lees signed a two-year deal at Huddersfield, running until the end of the 2022-23 season, with the option of a one-year extension.

Carlos Corberan's first season in charge at The John Smith's Stadium ended with The Terries conceding 71 goals in the league, the worst record in the division. The Spaniard will be hoping the arrival of Lees can add some much-needed experience and drastically improve on last season's record.

After a number of high-profile departures, Huddersfield boss Corberan mentioned the importance of bringing in some much needed experience. He told the Yorkshire Post: “His background talks better than anything I can say of him, it was important to have experienced centre-backs because we have lost (Tommy) Elphick, (Christopher) Schindler, (Richard) Stearman and (Richard) Keogh."

Lees, 30, has a plethora of Championship experience, making nearly 400 appearances in the second division whilst playing for Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday.

Huddersfield have already been keen to increase their depth in defence this summer, as Lees is the third centre-back to join for the club following the arrival of free agent Matty Pearson from Luton Town and exciting youngster Levi Colwill, who signed on-loan from Chelsea.

The Verdict

Despite Sheffield Wednesday's poor showing last season, Lees was still a solid figure in defence and could prove to be decent business for The Terries, who will be looking to drastically improve their defensive record from last season.

Lees has been an ever-present in The Championship over the past decade, making over 30 appearances in eight of the previous 10 league campaigns. This consistency could make him a valuable player for Carlos Corberan's side, where only one centre-back managed to make over 25 league appearances last season.

Arriving on a free, Lees seems an excellent coup for Huddersfield - who have made some impressive signing so far this summer. Lees is a competent defender at this level and will add some much needed quality to a new-look Huddersfield defence. This has all the makings of a top quality signing.
