Huddersfield Town have key player talks in the pipeline as Carlos Corberan and other senior members of staff begin looking ahead to the 2021/22 campaign.
A 1-1 draw with Coventry City last weekend, combined with results elsewhere in the Championship, secured Huddersfield’s place in the division for another season.
This weekend, they take on Reading at the Madejski Stadium and wrap up a relatively poor campaign. There will be little time for rest and recuperation, though, with Corberan planning talks with his out of contract players as he looks to filter through a list of senior names.
When quizzed if it was important these kind of discussions came as soon as possible, Corberan told his press conference: “Exactly – as soon as we finish the season, these things are going to be done because it’s very important the players head on their holidays knowing exactly what the future is going to hold, whether that’s here or not.
“That way we can get everyone working in the direction that they need to be working.”
It has been the long-term understanding of Football League World that Huddersfield are preparing to move on Alex Pritchard in the summer, whilst we have also had it confirmed that there’s a plan to trigger to 12-month option that sits on Juninho Bacuna’s deal at the John Smith’s Stadium.
However, the list of off-contract players stretches way beyond that, including the likes of Richard Stearman, Richard Keogh, Christopher Schindler, Alex Vallejo and Fraizer Campbell.
Corberan wasn’t pressed on the players he wants to keep at the club, but he did lay out his plan to analyse in a lot of detail heading into a big summer for Town.
Involved in that analyse will likely be those players that are heading into the final weeks of their current deals in West Yorkshire.
Corberan continued: “We are going to analyse with a lot of detail in every position and with every player that we have; their performance and also the contract situation of each player.
“And, it is also true, that we are going to be analysing the possibility of the market.
“Right now, I cannot tell you what will be our main target (in terms of personnel and position), but our main target as a club will be to build a strong squad.”
