Carlos Carvalhal has urged his side to take more risks in the final third after Sheffield Wednesday failed to score again on Friday night against Wolves.

The Owls have struggled to create chances and score goals in recent months and whilst they put in a good performance against the league leaders, John Ruddy had a relatively comfortable night in goal for the visitors.

And, speaking to the Sheffield Star, the Portuguese manager demanded more from his side going forward. “We must play like we did against Wolves but must be more aggressive in the attack. We must create more impact on defences. We need to do that.”

Strikers Gary Hooper and Jordan Rhodes have struggled to find the net in recent games, along with the forwards behind them, but Carvalhal insists it’s about the team improving.

It is not just attackers. It is the midfielders and wingers too. We must be more aggressive to try and achieve goals. It is something we must do better.”

Wednesday are ten points away from the top six and face Middlesbrough on Saturday.

The Verdict

The injury situation means it’s very tough for Carvalhal at the minute. There’s no doubt with Lee, Bannan, Fletcher and especially Forestieri in the team the Owls would be creating more.

However, that’s not to completely excuse the current side. There’s a lot of talent in the squad and they aren’t firing.

Whether it’s down to the players, or perhaps Carvalhal needs to be more adventurous, but something needs to change quickly otherwise Wednesday’s season could be over by the New Year.
