Carlos Carvalhal has revealed that Sheffield Wednesday’s £10m striker, Jordan Rhodes, was not confident enough to take a penalty in last night’s play-off semi-final against Huddersfield Town, reports BBC Radio Sheffield.

Wednesday were held to a 1-1 draw by Huddersfield after extra time and the semi-final was decided by a penalty shootout, which David Wagner’s side won 4-3, meaning they will now face Reading at Wembley for a place in the Premier League.

Sam Hutchinson and Fernando Forestieri both missed their respective penalties for Wednesday, but the major talking point from the shootout came when Carvalhal confirmed Rhodes didn’t put his name forward to take a penalty.

Speaking in the aftermath of Wednesday's play-off disappointment, Carvalhal revealed why Rhodes was not one of his five penalty takers, he said: “(Rhodes) did not want to (take a penalty), he said that he was not confident to take the penalty so that is why.”

Rhodes is one of the Sky Bet Championship’s most high-profile strikers, and Carvalhal fought to bring the 27-year old to Hillsborough on-loan during the January transfer window, a deal that will become permanent for a reported £10m in the summer.

Since his arrival from Middlesbrough in January, Rhodes has scored three goals in his 21 appearances for the Owls.
