Sheffield Wednesday secured a vital three points last night as they beat Millwall 2-1 at Hillsborough.

A torrid spell has seen the pressure increase on boss Carlos Carvalhal, but his players produced a solid showing to overcome the Lions.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star after the game, the Portuguese manager admitted it was all about the win and that performances will naturally pick up as confidence builds. “It was important after the last couple of weeks to win. We deserved to win. We know that we will play better and individual performances will grow up in the future. The collective performance will also grow up.” The winner came from Jordan Rhodes, his first league goal of the season and Carvalhal will hope that it can be enough to see him rediscover his prolific form.

Given the situation the Owls have found themselves in, you could forgive the home supporters if they were a bit restless, but the manager had nothing but praise for the way they spurred the team on. “They pushed the players and didn't make anyone nervous. I want to thank them.”

The Verdict

Whilst Wednesday still have a lot of work to do, that was a very important win for last night, particularly for the manager.

Speculation has intensified since the Steel City derby, but the chairman has stood by him and he will be glad to get a win.

Similarly, it's good of Carvalhal to praise the fans who have generally stuck by him. Now, it's down to the players to continue this sort of performance over a consistent basis and get back in the play-off picture.
