Carlos Carvalhal has admitted he completely understands why the fans are unhappy with how things are at Sheffield Wednesday right now, but insists the poor form is down to the injury crisis that has hit the team.

The Owls were without nine senior players against Wolves on Friday, including several key players, however they left the field to boos after their sixth game without a win.

And, speaking to the Sheffield Star, Carvalhal said this was a normal reaction, but believes the injuries have seriously harmed the team.

The boos are normal at the end when you don’t win. We have some problems preparing the team. I’m doing my work the best that I know. I’m here two and a half seasons, my teams were regular in the positions between four to eight. We’ve dropped a little because we’ve lost five or six players.”

Previous reports had suggested that a defeat to the league leaders would be the end of the Portuguese manager, yet he was adamant he still has the support of the chairman.

I have a good relationship with the chairman; the confidence in me is the same.”

The Verdict

The Owls are in a tough position and you can understand Carvalhal’s point to a certain extent.

They produced a good performance against a top side considering they were missing Forestieri, Hutchinson, Bannan, Lee, Westwood and Lees who would all seriously enhance the team.

However, Carvalhal has to take more responsibility himself for the recent run and he has made mistakes. If he was honest about that and tried to change things tactically then fans might be a bit more supportive but as it stands there’s a bad mood around the club and it’s hard to see it changing.
