Carlos Carvalhal highlights the area of his Sheffield Wednesday squad he is happy with

Speaking to Sheffield Wednesday’s official Twitter account, Carlos Carvalhal has praised his strike force, insisting he is happy with all the strikers at his disposal.

Wednesday boast one of the strongest squads in the Sky Bet Championship, which contains some of the division’s most respected strikers.

Jordan Rhodes, Steven Fletcher, Gary Hooper, Fernando Forestieri, Sam Winnall and Atdhe Nuhiu are all at Carvalhal’s disposal at this current time.

Despite his options in attack, Carvalhal’s side failed to score in Saturday’s opening day defeat to Preston North End, as the Owls suffered a 1-0 defeat to their Lancashire rivals.

Rhodes and Forestieri were partnered in attack, whilst Hooper was introduced from the bench during the second-half.

Fletcher and Nuhiu were unused substitutes and there was no place in the matchday 18 for Winnall.

Despite Wednesday failing to break down Preston on Saturday, Carvalhal has insisted he is happy with his strike force, he said: “We have a strong competition in attack, I am happy with the strike force we have, all of them have different abilities.”

The Portuguese manager singled one of his forwards out for special praise, he continued: “Let’s be clear, Fernando (Forestieri) is one of the best players I have managed in my career, he is a fantastic player and a nice guy.”

Wednesday now have a big week ahead of them as they look to get their 2017/18 campaign up and running.

Carvalhal’s side welcome Chesterfield to Hillsborough in the Carabao Cup this evening, before facing Queens Park Rangers and Sunderland in back-to-back home fixtures in the Championship.

The Verdict

Wednesday’s striking options are frightening, with Carvalhal having perhaps the best strike force in the division.

However, the Hillsborough faithful are becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of transfers, and whilst the attacking options look strong, the team needs strengthening behind them.

Carvalhal is keen to add a central defender and a midfielder, but will have to make a move fast, if he is to add the right quality before the end of the transfer window.
