Carlos Carvalhal has admitted that he will add to his squad in the January transfer window in an attempt to salvage something from Sheffield Wednesday’s season.

The Owls have endured a disappointing campaign and are currently ten points off the top six. Whilst that has seen the Portuguese manager come in for heavy criticism, he hasn’t been helped by the injury situation which saw nine senior players miss the defeat to Wolves last time out.

And, speaking to the Sheffield Star, Carvalhal acknowledged the injury crisis means he will be forced to utilise the market when it opens in ten days’ time.

Let’s see (what happens) in the beginning of January because we are looking to the market, we are looking to players, especially the players to loan. We have open eyes to that position and to one or another position.”

It is something we are analysing. We are missing players in crucial positions. If nobody was injured, we wouldn’t need a player.

Unfortunately for Carvalhal, Wednesday’s injuries have come at just the wrong time, with the Owls playing four games between tomorrow and New Year’s Day.

The Verdict

Fans will be pleased to hear that transfers will be made and the fact Carvalhal has openly stated he wants them done at the beginning may mean something is already close.

Quite simply, they need the players in. Wednesday have been unfortunate that they’ve lost key men but you should always be looking to improve anyway.

Carvalhal speaking about the upcoming window also suggests he is very confident about keeping his job too.
