Carlos Carvalhal has insisted that he remains confident that he can turn things back around at Sheffield Wednesday, reports the Sheffield Star.

Pressure continues to build on Carvalhal at Hillsborough, after the Owls suffered a third defeat in four games on Saturday, losing out to bottom of the table, Bolton Wanderers.

That defeat left Wednesday 12th in the Sky Bet Championship table, with Carvalhal’s side lucky to remain four points adrift of the play-offs.

More worrying for the Owls, is the now eight point gap to second placed, Cardiff City.

However, despite a worrying start to the 2017/18 campaign and pressure continuing to grow on Carvalhal, Wednesday’s boss delivered an upbeat message, insisting he can turn things back in his favour, he said: “If we can win some games in a row and come back with good performances, I’m absolutely sure the fans will follow us.

“But we must do our work. We can’t lose games and expect the fans to be happy.

“The fans are unhappy and they have reasons to be unhappy. I agree with them because I am unhappy."

Sections of Wednesday’s travelling support at the Macron Stadium on Saturday were calling for Carvalhal to leave, despite the Portuguese manager leading the club to back-to-back play-off appearances in the Championship.

Carvalhal now faces a vital run of fixtures in the Championship, with Wednesday looking to keep themselves in play-off contention between now and the end of the month.

The Owls are once again on the road this coming weekend, when they face Derby County at the Pride Park Stadium, before returning to Hillsborough for back-to-back home fixtures to finish October.

Barnsley visit the following Saturday for a South Yorkshire derby, before Millwall head to Hillsborough for a midweek clash on the final day of the month.

The Verdict

It is easy to see why pressure is building on Carvalhal, with Wednesday not even close to hitting the heights that many expect of them in the Championship.

Three defeats in four is worrying, as is Wednesday’s league position, however, the club’s supporters are quick to forget what Carvalhal has done for them – transforming the Owls from a mid-table side into promotion contenders.

A victory over Leeds prior to the international break showed what Wednesday can do, and given time, Carvalhal should deliver a push for the top-six once again.
