Carlisle United have confirmed that they have signed former Aston Villa man, Harry McKirdy following his release from the Championship side.

McKirdy spent the second-half of last season on loan with promotion-chasing League Two side, Newport County, who missed out on promotion to League One after a defeat in the play-off final against Tranmere Rovers.

He'll be hoping to hit the ground running, and interestingly, has only signed a one-year-deal at Carlisle, and will be keen to impress manager, Steven Pressley.

Speaking in an interview after the deal was signed,  Pressley expressed his delight at the completion of the deal.

"We’re delighted to have Harry on board. He fits the profile of the kind of player I’m looking for in that he's young, ambitious and hungry at what is a pivotal moment in his career."

Pressley went on to state that he is a player of real quality, who can play to a high standard of League Two football having previously played at this level in the past.

"His loan spells with League Two clubs means he knows what this level is about and there’s a real determination within him that he’s going to come here and be successful. I’m really pleased to have acquired his services."

The Verdict:

This is a fantastic signing.

McKirdy is a player that could arguably be playing at a higher level, and I think Aston Villa have made a mistake in allowing him to leave the club.

He'll be key to Carlisle's promotion bid next season.
