Cardiff rivalled by Aston Villa and Rangers in scrap to land Premier League midfielder

Cardiff City want to bring in James McArthur this summer, according to The Daily Mail.

Crystal Palace midfielder McArthur could leave Selhurst Park this summer with Aston Villa and Rangers also thought to be in the hunt for him.

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock was the man who brought McArthur to Crystal Palace from Wigan Athletic back in 2014 and now he is eyeing a reunion with the midfielder.

Warnock wants about eight new players to bolster his squad ahead of their upcoming Premier League campaign and McArthur is on his list of transfer targets.

The 30-year-old plays predominantly as a central midfielder but he can also play in a deeper midfield role too.

With over 200 Premier League appearances under his belt, combined from his time at Wigan and Palace, McArthur provides experience and knowledge of the top flight – something which is lacking in Cardiff’s squad.

Aston Villa are also keeping their tabs on the Scotland international, who scored in last weekend’s win over Stoke City, as they aim to strengthen their side in the summer.

However, this is all dependent on whether they win promotion as they may be financially restricted if they do not go up via the play-offs.

Rangers’ interest hinges on whether new manager Steven Gerrard fancies the player.

The Verdict

McArthur has proven his reliability in midfield for Palace over the years and he would be a superb addition for Cardiff.

The Bluebirds could do with his Premier League know-how as they look to survive in the top flight next year.

Aston Villa would also benefit from signing the 30-year-old as he would add competition for places in the middle of the park.
