Cardiff City are keen to let third-choice goalkeeper Joe Day head out on loan until the end of the season with Bristol Rovers showing an interest in his services, according to Wales Online.

Day has found opportunities limited since joining the Bluebirds from Newport County over the summer, and it now appears that the Championship outfit are looking to see out the remainder of the season with two senior goalkeepers in their ranks.

Alex Smithies has overtaken Neil Etheridge's as Cardiff's first choice between the sticks in recent weeks, and with both men now looking set to battle for a starting spot during the remainder of the season, there appears little place for Day in Neil Harris' plans.

It is being reported that League One side Bristol Rovers are considering the possibility of signing Day for the rest of the season, with their first-choice stopper Anssi Jaakkola looking set to miss the majority of the second half of the campaign.

Day has only made two appearances since heading to the Welsh capital at the start of the season, with one of these outings coming in Cardiff's first league game of the season as he replaced the injured Etheridge, while he has also played in the EFL Cup.

The Verdict

Cardiff would have been planning for Day to function as a back-up option if either Smithies or Etheridge were to depart the club, and with both players now looking likely to stay, it certainly seems that a loan move would be the best option for Day.

The former Newport man will be frustrated by the lack of first-team chances he has been afforded since his summer move, and he must now make every effort to impress his parent club during his potential loan spell in the second half of the campaign.

A switch to Rovers would represent a good loan move for Day given the close proximity between Bristol and Cardiff, and the fact the Gas are a League One side means he would still be at a higher level compared to what he was playing last season.

This is definitely the right decision for Day's short-term progress, and it also allows the opportunity for both parties to re-assess the situation in the summer.
