Cardiff City have started their search for a new manager following Neil Warnock's departure from the club on Monday after three years at the helm in the Welsh capital.

The Bluebirds have made an underwhelming start to the Championship season following their relegation last term, and the 1-0 defeat to Severnside rivals Bristol City on Sunday proved to be Warnock's final bow as he then left the club by mutual consent.

The 70-year-old transformed Cardiff's fortunes during his tenure by turning them from Championship strugglers into a Premier League side, and his successor will have a tough act to follow despite the Bluebirds' disappointing run so far this season.

Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman confirmed on Tuesday morning that the club would look to make an appointment within 72 hours, while he also claimed that owner Vincent Tan will now have a more hands-on approach, as per Press Association journalist Phil Blanche.

The Malaysian businessman has taken a back seat at the club in recent times following a tumultuous start to his ownership of the club, where he took the unpopular decision to re-brand Cardiff's kit and badge before eventually being forced to reverse this move.

The news that Tan will now starting taking on a more prominent role at the Cardiff City Stadium will surely worry the club's supporters, as the 67-year-old has previously proven that he does not possess the appropriate footballing knowledge to make key decisions at the club.

Cardiff would be in a much better position if they were to employ a specialist sporting director at the club, rather than turning to Tan to help plot their next move which could have a significant impact on the Bluebirds' immediate future.

There have also not exactly been a host of inspiring names linked with the Cardiff vacancy. The Daily Mail have reported that Neil Harris and Lee Bowyer are in contention, and while Bowyer would be a solid appointment, it seems unlikely he could be lured to South Wales given the club's current predicament.

Cardiff fans must be hoping that Tan is not held solely responsible for selecting the next boss, as this could spell serious trouble at a time when it is essential the South Wales side make a convincing appointment to consolidate their Championship future.
