It has emerged that a third candidate is in the frame to be the next Cardiff City manager, which may get Bluebirds fans thinking a variety of emotions.

Reported in Wales Online earlier today, former Stoke and Southampton manager and Welshman Mark Hughes is now in the running for the vacant post at the Cardiff City Stadium, as per the bookies, which may give some fans some positivity, while others will not be impressed.

Hughes was born in Wrexham, and represented Wales as a player and a manager, which may give fans comfort that the 56-year-old is a passionate Welshman, and understands how much the city's football club means to the people.

However, it will be his recent managerial record at Stoke and Southampton that will ultimately be judged. At Saints, Hughes won just five of his 27 games in charge, giving him a win percentage of 18.5%. A disastrous last season in charge of the Potters saw him sacked in January 2018, with the club in the Premier League relegation zone. They did not recover and ultimately succumbed to the drop.

That may give fans the feeling that Hughes has lost his way as a manager in recent years.

He has also never previously managed in the Championship, as all of his previous roles in club management have been at Premier League sides, which could be a positive if he were to land the job at Cardiff.

Nevertheless, Bluebirds fans will be frustrated as the name of many of their lips is Chris Hughton, and he has not been mentioned as a potential candidate. The former Brighton boss is also currently out of work, and has achieved promotion with three different sides from the Championship to the Premier League.

Former Millwall manager Neil Harris has been heavily linked with the role, as he is currently out of work, and has a similar footballing philosophy to Neil Warnock, which could make him settle in easier.

There has also been links with Lee Bowyer, but it has been reported by the South London Press that no official approach has been made.

With the constant twists and turns of this saga, it does not seem likely that the Cardiff fans will be hearing the end of it any time soon.
