Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker could be set for a surprise return to Tottenham Hotspur, the Mirror has reported.

Caulker has a relegation clause in his contract which allows him to leave now that the club are no longer in the Premier League

The 22-year-old left London for Wales in a £9 million move last summer, and shone as the star player as the Bluebirds were relegated back to the Championship.

The club may be forced to sell the player, however, after relegation from the Premier League has reportedly left the club in debt of around £160 million.

Tottenham will have the option of purchasing Caulker back, and look to be the favourites to sign the former Swansea loanee as newly-appointed manager Mauricio Pochettino looks to revamp the squad at White Hart Lane.

Spurs will face competition for the player’s signature from Liverpool, who are interested in bolstering their weak defence, which was heavily critisised last term.

The Anfield club will look to mount another title challenge next year and manager Brendan Rodgers sees Caulker as a player that could  strengthen the side and help them to compete with Manchester City.
