Cardiff have completed their first business of the summer transfer window, after announcing the signings of Will Vaulks, Curtis Nelson and Joe Day.

Midfielder Vaulks has joined from Rotherham United on a three year deal for an undisclosed fee. The 25-year-old impressed in the second tier for The Millers last season, scoring seven goals and providing seven assists in 41 league appearances as Paul Warne's side suffered an immediate relegation back to League One.

Centre back Nelson meanwhile has moved to the Cardiff City Stadium on a free transfer, signing a two year contract with the Welsh club.

The 26-year-old made 121 appearances in all competitions for Oxford after joining from Plymouth in the summer of 2016, and had been offered a new deal at the Kassam Stadium following the expiration of his previous deal with the club at the end of last season.

Day has also signed a two year deal at the club, and joins on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with League Two side Newport County. The goalkeeper enjoyed another impressive season as the Exiles reached the League Two play-off final, while also upsetting a number of higher level sides in another eye catching FA Cup run.

Speaking to the club's official website about the signings, Cardiff's Executive director and CEO Ken Choo said: “I’d like to welcome Will, Curtis and Joe to Cardiff City Football Club and I’m sure they’ll each contribute to what we’re trying to achieve this coming season.

"To be vying for promotion, we needed to ensure that we replaced those who left us at the end of last season with quality; we think we’ve done just that in adding these boys to our ranks."

The verdict

This is an impressive piece of business from Cardiff.

Vaulks in particular has been linked with a number of clubs since the end of the season, so Cardiff being the ones to secure his signature is an indication of the strength and appeal the Bluebirds still have for players despite their relegation.

All three players look to be solid additions to the Bluebirds squad ahead of next season, and you would expect them all to feature at some point or another throughout the course of what looks set to be a crucial campaign as they aim to bounce back from relegation last season.

The fact that both Day and Nelson have arrived on free transfer also represents a good bit of business, with funds therefore still available to spent on strengthening in other areas of the squad.
