Cardiff City are hunting for a new manager following Neil Warnock's resignation after the Severnside derby defeat on Sunday at the hands of Bristol City, and they should be prioritising Chris Hughton as their new manager.

Hughton has experience of the Championship and has been out of work since May, when he departed Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion.

Realistically, the 60-year-old's level would be the bottom half of the Premier League and the top half of the Championship, with the experienced manager having kept sides up in the top flight before as well as earned promotion from the second tier.

Those two promotions came with Newcastle United as title winners in 2010 and runners up with Brighton in 2017, with Hughton having an idea at what it takes to gain promotion from the division.

The ex-Newcastle man has earned the respect of many managers across England through his straight-talking approach and the attitude that he takes to the game on the training pitch and on the sidelines, demanding 100% from his players all the time.

Cardiff dream of promotion back to the Premier League after dropping out of the top flight last season, and Hughton would be the best option of getting them back there.

The former Tottenham Hotspur manager brings a direct style of play to his team who likes a big man up top to help lead the line, the likes of Andy Carroll and Glen Murray having led the line for his Championship promotion-winning sides, and Cardiff's squad could already play to his strengths.

With the likes of Robert Glatzel, Gary Madine and Danny Ward up front, a direct approach from Hughton would suit Cardiff however he isn't afraid to mix things up and get his sides playing football to try and break the opposition down.

The 60-year-old may be the more expensive option for Cardiff, however, he would be worth it as he would know a way of getting Cardiff playing and performing to the best of their abilities, something which wasn't quite happening under Warnock this season.

The Bluebirds are desperate for a natural leader who can steady the ship and get Cardiff playing football as well as getting results, something which the experienced manager is more than capable of getting them to do.

Hughton would be the ideal candidate to take the vacant spot in the manager's chair at The Cardiff City Stadium, and the Cardiff board should be doing anything that they can to bring him to the Welsh capital.
