Cardiff City goalkeeper Ben Wilson is set to join Oldham Athletic, according to a reliable journalist.

Football journalist Alan Nixon is reporting that Oldham Athletic are set to sign Ben Wilson on loan.

With less than 24 hours until the Football League kicks off, Oldham Athletic are without a senior goalkeeper.

Last season's stopper was Connor Ripley but he returned to parent club Middlesbrough after a phenomenal season between the sticks at Boundary Park.

Oldham are preparing to face Oxford United and are therefore ready to complete a swoop for Ben Wilson.

Ben Wilson is the third choice goalkeeper at Cardiff City and they are likely to sanction this loan deal.

With Neil Etheridge and Lee Camp ahead of him in the pecking order, Wilson is set for his third loan spell since joining the Welsh outfit from Accrington Stanley in 2013.

The 24-year-old has previously represented AFC Wimbledon and Rochdale in temporary stints away from Cardiff City.

According to Alan Nixon, Oldham Athletic will not be finished once this is completed and they will look to bring in another goalkeeper.

Oldham Athletic will hope to bring Wilson in before their league opener tomorrow.

The Verdict

There are plenty of question marks over this loan move.

Firstly, Ben Wilson is 24-years-old with very little senior experience under his belt.

Cardiff City clearly don't rate him either.

He also clearly has an attitude problem, once attacking Wimbledon fans by swearing at them and saying: "you're still paying to watch every week and helping towards my wage, I'm laughing and you're losing out".

However, Oldham Athletic do need a new goalkeeper desperately and Sunderland have made them wait too long for Max Stryjek.
