Cardiff City are interested in signing Romaine Sawyers on a free transfer this summer.

Steve Morison has been one of the Championship’s busiest managers so far this summer with his transfers, landing nine signings and two central midfielders already in Andy Rinomhota and Ebou Adams.

However, there’s the desire in South Wales to do more.

Wales Online report how Cardiff want to sign Sawyers, who is a free agent following his release from West Bromwich Albion at the end of last season.

It’s noted that Stoke City are also interested in signing Sawyers, having had the 30-year-old’s service on loan last season in the Championship.

Sawyers has been a classy operator in the midfield over a number of years now, featuring for the likes of Walsall, Brentford, West Brom and Stoke.

He featured 42 times for West Brom during the 2019/20 season, playing a crucial role under Slaven Bilic as the Baggies won promotion to the Premier League. Despite earning a chance in the top-flight, the subsequent changing of manager at the Hawthorns saw Sawyers drop out of favour.

Last year, the midfielder made 28 appearances for Stoke across all competitions, scoring three goals during that loan spell.

The Verdict

When Sawyers is on the absolute top of his game, there aren’t many better in the Championship than him.

He’s proved that at Brentford and West Brom in recent years, before losing his way a touch.

However, as a free agent, the level of interest in him shows that he’s still got enough about him to impact the level.

Right now, you’d think Stoke were ahead of Cardiff in the race to sign Sawyers given their previous loan, yet an exciting summer is unfolding in South Wales, with Morison really busy.

It might prove to be an opportunity that the 30-year-old fancies exploring.
