Bluebirds boss Russell Slade is keen to add to his wide options and has identified the Wales international as the number one target as he looks to make his first signing of the summer.

Cotterill had a fine season at Birmingham last year as he scored nine goals and created eight assists, while also impressing for Wales in their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

Wales Online understands Slade made an inquiry about the availability of the Cardiff-born player but was warned off by Blues boss Gary Rowett.

It is not clear how much it would cost to bring Cotterill to the Cardiff City Stadium but the Bluebirds have been frustrated this summer with failed attempts to bring Ipswich striker Daryl Murphy, Derby’s Johnny Russell and former Hull City man Stephen Quinn, who decided to join Reading.

Cotterill began his career at Bristol City and later went on to have a two-year spell at Cardiff’s arch rivals Swansea City.

He also had time at Wigan Athletic, Sheffield United, Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers.
