Newport County goalkeeper Joe Day is a target for another Welsh side in the form of Cardiff City, BBC Sport have reported.
Day has made a total of 243 appearances in all competitions for Newport since joining, initially on loan, from Peterborough United in the summer of 2014, and this season saved a decisive penalty in The Exiles' penalty shootout victory over Mansfield in the League Two play-off semi final.
Newport would however miss out on a place in League One for next season as a 119th minute header from Tranmere's Conor Jennings denied them promotion in the play-off final at Wembley.
Earlier in the season, Newport manager Michael Flynn had admitted to BBC Sport that his side would have to be promoted to League One if they were to have any hope of keeping Day in the summer transfer window, and Cardiff now look set to test The Exiles' resolve in the coming weeks.
The 28-year-old goalkeeper is out of contract at Rodney Parade at the end of the month, although The Exiles have offered him a new contract to extend his stay at the club.
The Verdict
This would be a smart piece of business for Cardiff.
Day has more than held his own against higher level sides during Newport's remarkable FA Cup runs in recent years, so there should be very little concern about him making the step up to Championship level.
With rumours of Premier League interest in current Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge refusing to go away, bringing in Day on a free could prove to be an inspired move.
While Day may be coming in cheaply, Etheridge will not be leaving for anything other than a significant fee, that could allow Cardiff to spend big on other areas of the squad ahead of their return to the Championship.
Having missed out on stepping up with the divisions with Newport, Day himself is also likely to be keen on the move to the Championship, particularly with a side who will be targeting a return to the Premier League sooner rather than later.
