Cardiff City will be saying farewell to defender Curtis Nelson after three-and-a-half years in South Wales as he has agreed terms on a move to Blackpool, according to Football Insider.

They have reported that the 29-year-old has been pencilled in for a medical with the Lancashire club after both relegation rivals came to a deal to send the centre-back to Bloomfield Road.

It comes with Nelson's contract at the Cardiff City Stadium running to a close this coming summer, and now Blackpool will take him off their hands on a permanent basis.

And it also means that Nelson will link up once again with new Blackpool head coach Mick McCarthy, who utilised him as a regular player during his time as manager in 2021 at Cardiff.

Derby County were credited with a serious interest earlier in the month with Nelson in what would have been a move closer to his Staffordshire roots, but instead he will stay in the Championship, swapping one relegation battler for another.

The Verdict

Nelson has been solid at times over the years for Cardiff, but his time has come to an end in the Welsh capital.

When fit and available, Nelson was a regular in the starting 11 for his first three seasons at the Bluebirds under different managers, but he was not particularly fancied by Mark Hudson in recent months and that has perhaps led to his imminent exit.

There could be an argument to be had that Nelson isn't of the required quality anymore to be in the starting 11 of a Championship club that has bigger aspirations of being in a relegation battle, but that point is up for debate.

Younger players such as Jack Simpson and Mark McGuinness are ahead of him in the pecking order at Cardiff so it's the right decision to move on - Blackpool need more experience at the back and in Nelson they are certainly getting someone who has plenty of that.
