Championship side Cardiff City have not offered midfielder Will Vaulks a new contract ahead of the expiration of his current deal this summer, according to Wales Online.

The 28-year-old may be one of the victims of what looks set to be a mammoth rebuild in the Welsh capital this summer with several first-teamers out of contract and many looking set to depart.

Marlon Pack, Alex Smithies and Aden Flint are all confirmed to be leaving the Cardiff City Stadium when their existing terms expire in under a month, with the latter thought to be closing in on a move to Stoke City.

Vaulks is another player that has been linked with a move away and has reportedly been offered contracts by "several" clubs, including second-tier sides who have offered him the chance to remain in his current division.

However, Sheffield Wednesday are also said to be battling hard for his signature with the midfielder open to a move to Hillsborough despite the step down to League One that will come with it.

And they will be boosted by this recent news with the Owls likely to be careful regarding how much they spend this summer after remaining in at the third tier, though it remains to be seen whether he will choose Darren Moore's side over those in a higher division.

The Verdict:

Wednesday should be looking to get this deal over the line because it would boost their chances of promotion considering the amount of second-tier experience the Welshman has under his belt.

His presence, as a midfielder that can operate just in front of the back four, could help to push the likes of Barry Bannan and George Byers forward, both of whom can get in and amongst the goals when given the license to get forward.

And if they can strengthen their forward area further with new additions, those fresh faces, Lee Gregory, Josh Windass, Bannan, Byers and others should give them enough firepower to be competing for automatic promotion.

Not only will Vaulks be important in giving others the confidence to get forward - but also defensively as an experienced head in front of what could be a new-look central defence next season with Chey Dunkley, Sam Hutchinson, Jordan Storey and Harlee Dean all departing.

So this deal would be a no-brainer if they can get it over the line, though they shouldn't be offering him a bumper deal considering the fact they are still in the third tier.
