Cardiff City are closing in on the signing of Birmingham's Isaac Vassell after seeing off competition from rivals Swansea for the striker.

The 25-year-old has suffered terribly with injuries over the years in what has been a frustrating time at St. Andrew's and it appears that new boss Pep Clotet is prepared to let the former Luton man go.

And, reporter Alan Nixon had confirmed earlier this week that the Swans were interested, although he revealed that the two clubs could not agree a fee for the player.

However, that hasn't been a problem for the Bluebirds, with the same journalist confirming on Twitter tonight that they had made real progress with Blues over a deal and suggested a move could be imminent.

"Cardiff. Late and very decisive move for Isaac Vassell at Birmingham. Pulled out of match tonight. More cash than Luton and Swansea paying."

As a result, Vassell won't be involved as Birmingham make the trip to the south coast to take on Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup later on.

The Verdict

This could be a shrewd bit of business from Neil Warnock as he needs new additions up top and if they bring in Vassell they would have a player who is lightning quick, has good movement and is hungry to prove himself.

His knee setbacks over the years have harmed his development and if he had stayed fit he could have been a key player for Blues over the years.

Of course, those fitness issues remain a concern but the Welsh side will do a thorough medical before going through with any transfer.

From Vassell's perspective, this would be a great move for him as it's clear he isn't going to be a regular under Clotet and he will feel he is joining a club capable of winning promotion.
