Former Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton is being lined up as a replacement for Neil Warnock at Cardiff City following Warnock's departure from The Cardiff City Stadium yesterday - as per The Times.

Warnock chose to step down following a 1-0 defeat to Bristol City in the Severnside derby on Sunday afternoon, and 60-year-old Hughton is now wanted to take over the reins for the Bluebirds.

Hughton brings bags of experience with him too, having won the Championship with Newcastle in the 2009-2010 season as well as going on to manage Birmingham City and Norwich City as well as Brighton & Hove Albion, leaving the latter in May.

The former Seagulls manager has also had caretaker spells in charge of Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle, as well as being assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland national team.

Hughton would bring a disciplined approach to Cardiff, the same style that Warnock brought to the Welsh club, and he also has the know-how at how to win the league as well as having that experience from a higher tier.

Cardiff are currently 14th in the Championship with 21 points from 16 games, as they begin their first manager search since 2016.

The Verdict

Hughton would be a good appointment for Cardiff as he would bring experience to the role as well as the knowledge of how to gain promotion from the Premier League.

The 60-year-old manager has a similar, disciplined approach to what Warnock had and therefore could get the Bluebirds playing again without having to change too much on the training ground and not have to implement a new style.
