A number of Championship clubs are eyeing up a move for Cardiff City left-back Greg Cunningham before Thursday's transfer deadline, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The report does not specify which clubs are showing an interest in the 28-year-old, but it does appear he is on the move after spending one season with the South Wales outfit.

Cunningham was signed ahead of Cardiff's return to the Premier League last season, but he only made seven league appearances as the Bluebirds slipped to relegation and dropped back down to the second tier.

The Manchester City academy product was purchased to provide competition at left-back after impressing during his three years at Preston North End.

However, Joe Bennett managed to keep Cunningham out of the side for the majority of last season, meaning the former Deepdale star has not played a competitive match for Cardiff since January 1st.

Bennett was also named in Neil Warnock's starting line-up for the season opener against Wigan on Saturday, so Cunningham may need to move on if he wants regular game time this term.

The verdict

Cunningham was a top performer during his time with Preston, so it will have hurt for him to have not featured much since sealing his Premier League move to Cardiff last summer.

The defender must now ensure he is playing regular football as he enters his peak playing years, and it seems he is far from guaranteed this at Cardiff given Bennett's form.

Cunningham should be pushing for a move away from the Cardiff City Stadium before Thursday's deadline, as he was not even named on the bench for the Bluebirds' season opener.

He would be an asset for many clubs in the Championship and I could maybe see him moving to a Blackburn, or perhaps sealing a return to Preston.
