Neil Warnock has torn into Joe Bennett, with the Cardiff City boss accusing the defender of not wanting to travel to Leeds United next week following his FA Cup red card yesterday, as reported by The Sun.

Bennett was cautioned for a shocking challenge of Leroy Sane during the first-half of yesterday’s clash with Manchester City, which realistically warranted a red card.

However, late in the contest, Bennett finally received his marching orders following another reckless tackle, which has led to a surprise roasting from Warnock, who has accused the defender of getting sent-off on purpose to avoid travelling to Leeds next Saturday.

Warnock said: “I was disappointed with the sending off because he obviously doesn't want to go to Leeds.

"When you are on a yellow, that's pathetic, that's disrespectful to his team-mates."

Bennett’s dismissal will now mean he misses next Saturday’s clash with Leeds due to suspension, as Warnock returns to Elland Road with the hope of putting his side back in the automatic promotion places.

Cardiff’s sole focus will now be going into the Championship’s promotion race, after goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling sank the Bluebirds’ FA Cup hopes yesterday, with Man City progressing thanks to a 2-0 victory.

Warnock’s side currently sit third in the Championship table.

The Verdict

Bennett’s first-half tackle on Sane was shocking, and in the end, he got the red card that was deserved.

Warnock’s public accusation is a surprise, but with Cardiff fighting for promotion, his frustration is understandable, with the Bluebirds now heading to Leeds without a key player.

Cardiff should be able to manage in Bennett’s absence, but there is no doubt that their task at Elland Road will be greater without the 27-year-old.
