Cardiff City boss Neil Harris has said his squad is 'too big', and that players will need to leave the club in January.

The Bluebirds travel to Nottingham Forest tomorrow, as Harris takes charge of his third game as manager.

His appointment earlier this month was met by mixed reactions from fans but after an impressive comeback to draw with Charlton and a 1-0 win at home to Stoke on Tuesday night, fans are quickly warming to the former Millwall manager.

Harris spoke to BBC Sport Wales today ahead of the Forest game, and discussed the upcoming January transfer window:

"What I do know is it is a big squad and before we bring anyone in, in January, players will have to leave."

Cardiff have 29 first-team players in their squad and having dropped down from the Premier League in the summer, will likely have a high wage bill too.

January will prove a very important month for the club and Harris has a lot of deadwood to try and shift. He'll also need to bring in one or two faces to see him through to next summer, when he can really put his own touch on the team.

"We are getting better all the time (with fitness), the players out are getting closer, it is getting to the stage where it is tough to put on XI v XI because of the amount of bodies we've got, in some ways it is too many, it is too big a squad," admitted Harris. "We work with it until January and then we start it there."

Seven games stand between Cardiff and the New Year. They currently sit in 11th-place of the Championship - five points off their Welsh rivals Swansea City in 6th.

The verdict

Cardiff do have a massive squad and Harris will have a task on his hands to refine it in January. There's plenty of players who could leave and it will free up his wage bill for sure, and we could even see Harris make a couple of signings in January which will keep Cardiff in the Championship for next year, and maybe even see them push for the top-six this season.
