Middlesbrough have confirmed that midfielder Marten de Roon has left the club.

Marten de Roon leaves to re-join Atalanta, one year after joining Boro from the Serie A side.

After making 36 appearances for Middlesbrough, the once-capped Netherlands international leaves for an undisclosed fee to join Serie A outfit Atalanta, who will be competing in the Europa League next season after finishing fourth in the Italian top division.

The 26-year-old will probably be most fondly remembered for his late equaliser against Manchester City in the Premeir League.

Boro had been keen to keep Marten de Roon, who played in the opening game of the season, but they will have to do without the central midfielder this season.
