Plenty of Derby County fans have reacted on social media after the club announced the signing of Wayne Rooney as a player-coach.

The 33-year-old will join the Rams from MLS outfit DC United in January, signing an 18-month contract that will keep him at Pride Park until the summer of 2021.

As well as playing, Rooney will also assist Derby manager Phillip Cocu as he looks to build his skills and experience as a coach ahead of a potential managerial career.

The former England captain is his country's and Manchester United's all-time record goalscorer and one of the biggest names in world football.

Rooney joined DC United from Everton in 2018 and has scored 25 goals in 46 games for the MLS side, including a spectacular goal from inside his own half.

Derby began their Championship campaign last night with a 2-1 win at Huddersfield Town, thanks to a brace from Tom Lawrence.

The Rams will be hoping to challenge for promotion from the Championship again this season, after losing to Aston Villa in the play-off final at Wembley last term.
