Marcelo Bielsa is hoping to become the man to lead Leeds United back to the Premier League, with his side still unbeaten after seven testing fixtures of the Championship season.

Leeds were relegated from the Premier League in 2004, and since then it has been very rare that Leeds have challenged for promotion in the Championship, with the Whites usually finding themselves around mid-table.

There is genuine hope that Bielsa can mount a promotion push this season, with the hope that he can go one better than Garry Monk, who was the last head-coach to bring that kind of hope to Elland Road.

Monk spent the 2016/17 season in charge at Elland Road, and despite a tough start to the season, he put Leeds in promotion contention.

Leeds broke into the play-offs in November, where they stayed through until April.

In mid-March, Leeds welcomed Brighton and Hove Albion to Elland Road, with the Seagulls sitting in the automatic promotion places.

Monk watched his side win 2-0 thanks to two Chris Wood goals, which left Leeds fourth in the table, eight points clear of seventh with just eight fixtures of the season remaining.

That prompted a bold claim from Phil Hay at the Yorkshire Evening Post, who considered a play-off appearances nailed on.

From there, Leeds fell to pieces, winning just once in their remaining eight games and suffering catastrophic defeats against Wolves and Burton Albion.

Monk’s side eventually finished seventh and were the laughing stock of the Championship.

Leeds’ position following the Brighton victory didn’t just make Hay believe Leeds were heading for the play-offs, with supporters also left red-faced.

In our latest FLW Rewind, we look at some reaction from that evening…
