Liverpool have opened discussions with Stoke City over a possible move for Xherdan Shaqiri, according to John Percy of The Telegraph.

Shaqiri has a release clause of £13m which Liverpool are prepared to match and Percy expects this deal to be concluded this month.

The 26-year-old scored eight goals and contributed with seven assists last season but could not prevent the Potters from suffering relegation to the Championship.

Shaqiri is wanted by Jurgen Klopp, who is hoping to add depth to his attacking midfield options this summer.

The Switzerland international recently returned from the World Cup finals in Russia, where he scored one goal and grabbed one assist as his country reached the knockout stages of the tournament.

Now that he is back, the winger’s future is likely to be resolved soon with Liverpool pressing ahead with their attempts to sign him.

Here are eight things being said on social media after Percy broke the news that Liverpool had opened talks over a move for Shaqiri.
