It's been an eventful summer at Burton Albion, with record signings, big-money departures and an extremely high turnover of players.

However, Nigel Clough will be confident that he has a squad that can continue the Burton Albion story in the second tier of English football.

A tough start to the season saw the Brewers' lose their first three games. As they trailed 1-0 at home to Birmingham City in their fourth league game, things looked bleak.

Yet a stirring second half performance saw Albion pick up their first win of the campaign, which was followed by a point against Sheffield Wednesday next time out. It leaves Clough's men in 21st position, and outside the relegation zone.

The last two performances will be a lift to everyone at the club. They suffered huge misfortune in pre-season after record signing Liam Boyce fell to a season-ending injury just days after joining. Whilst, last seasons player of the year, Jackson Irvine, has recently departed for Hull.

But, Clough has moved to add some shrewd signings to his group. The final day saw fans favourite John Brayford return to the Pirelli Stadium for a third time and Jamie Allen joined late on from Rochdale.

The club have high hopes for 22-year old Allen, who has captained Dale for the past two years, despite his young age. He will be playing for the first time in the second tier and the young and hungry approach is clearly something Clough had to consider given his budget restraints.

The ex-Derby County manager has also added players with a point to prove. Forward Joe Mason arrived on loan from Wolves after failing to get a look-in under Nuno Espirito Santo and promptly scored with his first touch in the 1-1 draw with Wednesday.

Similarly, Sean Scannell will be desperate to play having seen his career stall over the past few years. With these signing complemented by experienced professionals such as Jake Buxton and Stephen Warnock, you can see the ideas behind Clough's recruitment.

Time will tell as to whether it will work, but if the last two games are anything to go by, Burton Albion could be prolonging their stay in the Championship.
