Middlesbrough are interested in making a move for Charlton Athletic defender Anfernee Dijksteel, according to The Sun.

The full-back has one year left to run on his contract at The Valley, but it is now being reported that new Boro boss Jonathan Woodgate is keen on making Dijksteel his first signing at the Riverside Stadium.

Dijksteel was a regular feature in Charlton's promotion-winning side last season, as Lee Bowyer guided the Addicks to promotion from League One via a dramatic play-off final victory.

But Bowyer now faces a fight to keep some of his key men at the club - with defender Patrick Bauer having already joined Preston - and Dijksteel is the latest name to be linked with a move away.

In today's FLW Six Pointer, we dissect this potential move...

So, firstly what is Dijksteel's background?

"The 22-year-old came through the ranks at the Nike Academy before joining Charlton's development set-up in 2016.

"He flirted with first-team involvement throughout the 2016/17 season, and he finally made his debut in August 2017 during a 2-1 victory over Exeter City in the EFL Cup.

"He was involved nine other times that season, but he then established himself as a regular under Bowyer last term and made a total of 30 appearances in all competitions."

Why are Middlesbrough in pursuit of him?

"Dijksteel has largely played at right-back for Charlton, but he thrives most when given attacking license.

"This has seen him also play further up the pitch for Bowyer's side, as he has a great deal of pace which can make him a real menace on the right flank.

"Woodgate has been tasked with deploying a more exciting brand of football at the Riverside, and signing a forward-thinking defender like Dijksteel would be a promising start to fulfilling his brief."

Would Dijksteel start for Middlesbrough?

"Boro are currently very short on full-backs, with George Friend and Ryan Shotton the only senior full-backs at the club presently.

"This means that Dijksteel would certainly see his fair share of first-team action for the club next season if the deal was to go through.

"Furthermore, Shotton was a player regularly used by Pulis, much to the criticism of fans. Middlesbrough will be looking to ditch the remnants of the Pulis era next season, so I think Dijksteel could well establish himself in Woodgate's side next season as the club enters a new period."

Should this be a worry for Charlton?

"Despite their recent promotion, it remains an ominous time at The Valley. They were recently blessed with the news that Bowyer has extended his contract, but the initial statement which hinted at his departure suggests all is not well behind the scenes.

"A number of Charlton's first-team squad have seen their contracts expire this summer, and Bauer has already made his move to Preston while Joe Aribo could reportedly quit the club to join Rangers.

"This makes the interest in Dijksteel from Boro a real concern, as Charlton may be unable to compete with their financial strength if an offer came in. Charlton could end up being victims of their own success if they can't keep hold of their best players ahead of a Championship return."

Are Charlton making a concerted effort to keep hold of Dijksteel?

"The club are reportedly set to offer Dijksteel a new deal in order to convince him to stay at The Valley, but this will need to see the defender earn a big pay rise if it is to work.

"Charlton will need to hope that Dijksteel decides to show loyalty to Charlton, who were the club who handed him his breakthrough. However, he could not be blamed if he took the bigger offer at Middlesbrough.

"The fact Bowyer signed fresh terms at The Valley will be a big factor working in Charlton's favour as they convince the likes of Dijksteel to stay, but Boro may eventually boast too much pull factor."

So, can you see this move being a success?

"I think there is every chance that Dijksteel can be a great success in the north-east.

"It would likely take him some time to adjust to his new surroundings, and the fact he is still young means he may not make a spectacular impact immediately.

"However, this move is indicative of the fresh direction that Middlesbrough are aiming to head in under Woodgate, and this is a signing that could hugely benefit in the club in years to come. This would particularly be the case when Woodgate has established a new, expressive identity at the club."
