Barnsley Transfer Rumours

Cameron McGeehan reveals intentions over his potential future at Barnsley and Portsmouth

Cameron McGeehan has suggested that he is open to the prospect of making a potential permanent move to Portsmouth during the next transfer window, after impressing during his time at Fratton Park.

The midfielder arrived at Portsmouth on loan from Championship strugglers Barnsley back in the January transfer window, and McGeehan has helped to add some extra quality to Pompey’s midfield as they look to mount a successful promotion challenge from League One.

McGeehan found himself out of favour at Barnsley, but he managed to make a positive impact for Portsmouth since his January arrival, managing to score two goals in 15 appearances to help Kenny Jackett’s side close the gap on the automatic promotion places to just two points.

The 25-year-old could still play an important role in helping Portsmouth go on to achieve promotion to the Championship, if the League One season does get back under way following the suspension to the EFL campaign.

Portsmouth last won the FA Cup in 2008, but how many have they won in their history?

Speaking to The News, McGeehan suggested that he would be interested in making his move to Portsmouth a permanent one in the next transfer window, but he acknowledged that the uncertain financial situation at club’s across the EFL might potentially affect any possible deal.

He said: “I’d love to be part of Pompey going forward. It’s a massive club and they have the powers to go and do well at the next level.

“I guess the main focus is to get the job done and be promoted first then see what happens.

“Obviously, everything has been thrown into a bit of a mess with the Covid-19 and clubs aren’t going to know what they’re going to be able to do (in the transfer market).

“But it is something that would interest me. I spoke to the gaffer about it a couple of times early on but we’ll see how it goes. I can’t really control it.”

The verdict

This will be promising news for Portsmouth and Jackett, who is likely to be keen to bring in McGeehan on a permanent deal whenever the transfer window is able to reopen, with the club needing to add to their options in midfield during the next window whichever league they happen to be playing in.

McGeehan has made a positive impression at Portsmouth since he made the move to Fratton Park on loan from Barnsley, and has shown enough flashes of quality to make him a suitable option for the club to bring in on a permanent transfer.

The fact that the midfielder is out of favour with Barnsley and is unlikely to feature in the club’s long-term plans should potentially help Portsmouth in their aims of making the move a permanent one whenever the transfer window is able to reopen.
