Blackburn Rovers are one of several Championship clubs interested in the signing of centre back Cameron Humphreys, a report from The Daily Mail has claimed.

A former member of Manchester City's academy, Humphreys joined Belgian side Zulte Waregem back in the summer of 2019.

The 23-year-old has since gone on to make 58 appearances in all competitions for Waregem, but with his contract in Belgium expiring at the end of this season, interest is seemingly growing in the centre back from elsewhere.

According to this latest update, Blackburn, along with Nottingham Forest, Luton and Huddersfield, are all showing an interest in bringing Humphreys back to his home country.

But just what could the signing of Humphreys actually mean for Blackburn?

Here, we've taken a look at some of the big questions that may be arising from these links, in order to get a better idea of that.

Is it a good potential move?

It does seem as though this has the potential to be a good signing for Blackburn.

The fact he came through the youth ranks at Manchester City, even making a handful of first-team appearances, highlights the quality the centre back possesses.

Indeed, Blackburn have had success in recent years with two on loan centre backs from the Etihad in Tosin Adarabioyo and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, which could make this an appealing deal, especially with the top-flight experience he has in Belgium as well.

Given Humphreys is available on a free with his contract expiring in the summer, this could be a safe and useful deal from a financial perspective as well, meaning this could be well worth pursuing for Rovers.

Would he start?

You would expect Humphreys to enjoy a run in the lineup if he moves to Ewood Park.

As things stand, Blackburn will be losing two centre backs in the summer, when Darragh Lenihan's contract and Jan Paul van Hecke's loan from Brighton are both set to expire.

Meanwhile, Daniel Ayala continues to struggle for fitness, potentially leaving Scott Wharton and Hayden Carter - currently on loan at Portsmouth - as the club's two established centre backs.

That means there should be plenty of chances for Humphreys to start if he makes the move to Blackburn, particularly when you consider the club have spent much of the season using a formation that employs three central defenders from the start.

What does he offer?

One useful attribute that Humphreys would provide is his versatility.

The 23-year-old has played in both a back three and back four during his time with Waregem, which could help him adapt quickly if Rovers do need to switch between the two systems.

It is also worth noting that he is capable of playing right-back when required, and that too could help Blackburn, given their current first-choice option in that position - Ryan Nyambe - is another who is out of contract at the end of this season.

At 23-years-old, Humphreys is also at the relatively early stages of his career, meaning he could also emerge as a long term asset for Blackburn, with the potential to earn them a decent return on their investment further down the line.
