Sheffield Wednesday keeper Cameron Dawson has admitted it will be tough for the Owls to win promotion this season, and revealed the side need to have more belief in themselves.

After making the top six in successive seasons, the last 18 months have been hard for Wednesday with the club significantly changing both on and off the pitch.

Big-money signings no longer arrive, with Jos Luhukay focusing on bringing through younger players.

Yet, despite the smaller resources, Wednesday currently sit sixth and have impressively navigated through a tough fixture list in recent weeks.

However, when speaking to the Sheffield Star, Dawson was cautious about the Owls chances of sustaining a promotion push this season.

"Would we like to challenge? Of course we would. It is going to be tough. There are a lot of good teams. There are a lot of teams who have invested a lot of money."

The Wednesday number one added that there is a lot of quality in Luhukay's squad, whilst calling for more belief from the squad.

"We will give it a right good go. We have got some good players in there. We believe in ourselves but maybe we need to believe in ourselves a bit more."

The Verdict

This is an honest comment from Dawson and a very realistic one in terms of analysing the competition they face in the league.

But, it may be concerning that he doesn't feel the squad have enough confidence in themselves, although winning regularly will change that.

For now, it's about taking things a game at a time for the Owls and three points against Boro will help them build momentum.
