Cambridge United are thought to be eyeing a swoop for full back Kyle Knoyle as his Swindon Town contract looks set to expire, as revealed by BBC Radio Wiltshire, via the Swindon Advertiser.

The 22-year-old is thought to have failed to meet the deadline set by Robins boss Richie Wellens to sign a new deal and that's thrown his future into doubt.

Knoyle is a former West Ham trainee who made 48 appearances in all competitions for the Robins last season as they battled to a mid-table finish. He's previously enjoyed a loan spell north of the border with Dundee, as well as one with Wigan Athletic, but appears to have kicked his final ball for Swindon.

Cambridge had a tough season, sacking their manager just as Swindon did with Phil Brown. They dismissed Joe Dunne after a poor start to the season, but the experienced Colin Calderwood was unable to significantly change their fortunes and they still finished in the bottom four, six points clear of safety.

Knoyle, a former England Under 18 international, is one of two players offered a new deal at Swindon without having yet signed, Dion Conroy being the other.

The Verdict

Swindon boss Richie Wellens will not be happy at this development. He wanted to keep some of his current squad together, but his hardline approach appears to have backfired.

He openly set deadlines in the media and that's backed him into a corner. He can't be seen to retract his stance and now he might just be paying an early price.
