Cambridge United had a solid League One campaign last time out and only just missed out on a spot in the top half of the division.

Now, boss Mark Bonner will want to push his side on again and ensure they break into the top 12 in the third tier and potentially have a run towards the play-off spots. Recruitment for the manager will begin now then - and he claimed he can 'never say never' to Cambridgeshire Live over a potential return for Jensen Weir from Brighton. However, he did also claim that he 'wasn't looking' at a deal for him just yet.

The player made 24 appearances on a loan deal with the club last season, with one goal along the way. The youngster proved to be a solid member of the side during his time there and there would be plenty who might like to see the midfielder make a return.

Considering that he again might not get much action with his parent club Brighton next season - he's still yet to make an appearance for the club in their first-team - a loan deal could be a real possibility.

However, Mark Bonner has revealed that he might not necessarily look towards doing short-term deals again this summer and would prefer permanent moves - and that if he did try and get a loan done, it might take a little while longer and could happen later on in the summer window.

Speaking to Cambridgeshire Live over the player, he said: "I don’t think you ever say never on players returning to the club. We always like that bit of stability, but it’s not something we’re looking at at the moment.

"We’ll just have to wait and see how the next little period goes, and whether or not those pop up as options for us in the future, and obviously from their side, whether it’s something they were ever interested in.

“It’s certainly not something that we’re actively looking at right now, and I think loans for us probably will take a little bit longer. It certainly won’t be one that we do early."

Bonner then has seemingly ruled out a loan deal happening for Weir right now, if not full stop. He didn't rule out a deal at some point but it does appear as though Weir might have to look elsewhere for action in the next campaign rather than with Cambridge.

The Verdict

Another loan deal to Cambridge would likely suit club and player down to the ground if another move could be done.

Jensen Weir was superb for the club in League One last season and would no doubt appreciate the chance to have a crack at the third tier. It would no doubt also help continue his development and help get him up to standard to at least be a good option in the Football League.

Considering he probably won't play for Brighton again next season either, it would be much more beneficial for the 20-year-old to head out on another short-term deal to get regular action rather than sitting on the bench. Joining a side he is familiar with again would also take much less adapting than if he went to a new team.

It appears though that Cambridge aren't exploring that possibility right now and instead seem set on more permanent deals. That could benefit the club more in the long run to have their own players - but Weir is a player who could still be a very good option for them even if it is only short-term.
