Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough is making waves in the Championship with his summer transfer activity, and has already smashed the Brewers transfer record with the acquisition of SPFL Top scorer Liam Boyce.

Clough has already made a number of other signings in recent weeks, including former Wigan defenders Jake Buxton and Stephen Warnock, and could look to return to the DW for another Latics player in winger Michael Jacobs.

The versatile 25-year-old played 43 times in the league last season, adding 3 goals and 4 assists to his side’s cause, which was ultimately not enough to keep them in the division.

With just a year remaining on his contract, Wigan may consider offloading the former Northampton winger this summer to spare losing him on a free in a year’s time.

Burton will be in the market for a winger having seen loan man Michael Kightly return to parent club Burnley, and although he has now a free agent, there has been no further progress on a permanent deal.

Jacobs could be an excellent alternative, and his ability to put the ball into the box will appeal to Clough, with record signing Boyce set to haunt the danger zone for the Brewers.

Boyce was deadly in Scotland, and can continue this form in England with the right service.

Jacobs is young enough to continue to improve, and a move to Burton may see the player realise his full potential.
