Burton Albion surprisingly announced at the end of last season that ever present 'keeper, Jon McLaughlin would not be on the club's retained list, despite playing all but three of their Championship games.

Veteran stopper, Stephen Bywater debutised for the injured McLaughlin for the final three matches of Burton's maiden Championship campaign, and remains the only 'keeper on their books to have made a senior appearance, since his counterpart was released.

Youngster Harry Campbell is currently second choice, but is yet to make his first team bow for either Albion or his former club Bolton. Nigel Clough will be taking a huge gamble if he does not bring in reinforcements.

An Under-20 World Cup winner with England this summer, Freddie Woodman has been tipped for a bright future and the Newcastle United man will be desperate for first team football this season.

As it stands, Woodman will be fifth choice behind Tim Krul, Rob Elliott, Karl Darlow and Matz Sels, and although Newcastle are likely to offload at least one of the aforementioned, the 20-year old will find it difficult to dislodge the wealth of goalkeeping talent the club have.

However, the Magpies will not be in any hurry to sell him, and after a great progress was made in a loan spell at Kilmarnock last season, another such deal would be worth both Newcastle and Woodman's time.

Both parties would also be keen to see that the youngster can test himself at a higher level than in Scotland, so the Championship and Burton Albion is a viable destination for Woodman.

Interest in the goalkeeper from elsewhere will intensify on the back of the Under-20's side success, so Nigel Clough should pounce quickly to bring Woodman in on a loan deal.
