Burton Albion currently occupy top spot in Sky Bet League One, which after only gaining promotion to the league last season, may come as a surprise to some fans and punters.

The Brewers legendary former manager Nigel Clough doesn’t see it as a shock however and is not actually surprised in the slightest by the club’s rise through the leagues.

Following their League Two title win last season many expected a season of struggle for the club based at the Pirelli Stadium but in current boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, they have a manager whose stock continues to rise.

Clough was the man responsible for putting Burton on the map during his decade in charge, winning the Unibond title in 2002 and leaving the club with an unassailable lead at the top of the Conference when he departed for Derby County in 2009.

Clough took time out this week to speak to the Brewers’ official website, about the club’s current dominance.

He said: “When you get promoted into a new league, especially one the club has never been in before, it can be difficult. But even from the end of last season I thought they could do well in League One.

“They are building on the confidence that has been at the club for a few years now. Gary Rowett started that by building a group of players who were not used to losing and that is a nice habit to get into.”

It remains to be seen whether the club can maintain their current run of form but they certainly aren’t going to be guilty of making up the numbers despite embarking on their first season in the third tier.
