Burnley's Sean Dyche has revealed that ex-Nottingham Forest boss Brian Clough is one of the coaches that helped to shape him as a manager.

The job the 48-year-old has done at Turf Moor is hugely impressive, helping the Clarets to establish themselves in the Premier League and play in Europe last season.

Dyche's work has not gone unnoticed and the English coach has been linked with a move to other top-flight clubs.

As a player, the defender made more than 400 club appearances in a career that lasted nearly two decades and began at the City Ground.

Dyche was a product of Forest's youth system but never featured for the senior side, moving to Chesterfield in 1990.

In an interview with The Athletic, he revealed that despite never playing under the Reds boss, Clough helped to shape him as a manager.

He said: "Clough insisted on certain things, the ‘get your haircut, son’ line.

“It was very rare that Forest players stepped out of line. Beneath the way of playing was respect, honesty and the hard work ethic.

“You are part of Nottingham Forest and there are standards here and they are set in stone. I definitely believe in that. I did anyway but it enhanced it.”

The Verdict

Reds fans will likely love to hear this but it is no surprise to hear that Dyche has been shaped by Clough.

He may never have played for the Forest senior side but starting your career under a great manager like Clough, who had already had his major successes by that time, it would be difficult not to look to take things from him.

Among other silverware, Clough won one First Division title, four League Cups and the European Cup in consecutive years at Forest – you feel Dyche would be happy with even a fraction of that success.

Forest will no doubt be hoping to face Dyche's side twice in the Premier League next season.
