Burnley look like they could be on the hunt for more attacking options this summer and their search for strikers has seemingly led them to Makhtar Gueye, as reported by Nieuwsblad in Belgium.

The Clarets have been relegated back down to the Championship and that will mean whoever the new boss is will need to come in and reshape the squad to his liking, whilst ensuring they are strong enough to bounce straight back up to the top flight.

One area that the club certainly needs to improve is in their forward line, with the club's highest goalscorer in the last campaign being Maxwel Cornet with just nine goals. The next best effort came from defender Ben Mee with three.

Burnley then will need some strikers - and one name that has cropped up is Makhtar Gueye, who currently plays for KV Oostende in Belgium. The 24-year-old has spent the last two seasons with the club and has been consistently solid in front of goal, managing 12 goals a season in Belgium, with a total of three assists to boot.

Prior to that, the striker played in France and bagged a further six goals during his time there as a teenager. It seems then as though Gueye has goals in him and that is exactly what the Clarets need in their squad as they prepare for life as a Championship club.

Burnley reportedly feel that Gueye could add plenty to their squad, especially in front of goal and with a deal likely doable for relatively cheap, it means that Burnley could find an answer to their goalscoring problems in the shrewd addition of the 24-year-old player.

The Verdict

Those outside of Belgium and France might not have heard much of Makhtar Gueye but the signs are there that he could be a solid addition to Burnley's strikeforce.

If you look at his record in Belgium, it certainly does make for pleasing reading. Two 12-goal seasons suggests that he is not merely a flash in the pan goalscorer and that given the right service, he can be a real asset to a side in attack. He knows where the back of the net is already and his age means there is potential for him to get even better.

He is then, exactly the type of gamble the club should be making and is the kind of player that the club should be looking at. He represents a low risk considering his record so far and his potential fee but he has a high ceiling and could end up being a really shrewd addition by the club.

Gueye hasn't been tested in England yet so it would be interesting to see how he fares in the Football League but Burnley need to find goals from somewhere and Gueye could be the answer.
