Burnley transfer target due in England for medical ahead of multi-million pound move

Published

Reports in Belgium claim that Anderlecht goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen will travel to England today in order to undertake a Burnley medical ahead of a multi-million pound transfer to Turf Moor.

As per Belgian outlet Le Soir, Vincent Kompany wants the shot-stopper at Turf Moor following the departures of Nick Pope and Wayne Hennessey, stating he is set to ‘replace’ them, potentially hinting he could be the Clarets number one next term.

The fee reportedly being paid supports that, too, with their report stating that the 19-year-old is set to cost the club five million euros, or approximately £4.2 million pounds.

Bonuses will be a part of the deal, too, though, claim the Belgian outlet, potentially taking the fee higher.

If Verbruggen joins, he will be the eighth arrival of the summer at Turf Moor, with Vincent Kompany’s side’s rebuild going deeper and deeper as the weeks progress.

Given that he is on the books at Kompany’s former club, the Belgian boss will be knowing exactly what he is getting in signing Verbruggen.

However, it should be noted that the 19-year-old is rather inexperienced at senior level.

Where did Burnley finish in the league last season?

He came through the ranks at NAC Breda in the Netherlands, but never made a first team appearance there before heading to Belgium in 2020/21.

At Anderlecht, he made just seven senior appearances under Kompany, with just one of those coming last season.

Burnley kick off their Championship campaign against Huddersfield Town on July 29th.

The Verdict

This is a really interesting one.

It seems a big outlay for a player with just seven senior appearances to his name, however, given he is a known quantity to Kompany, the Clarets know what they are getting in the 19-year-old.

If reports in Belgium are accurate and he is being brought in to be first choice, it could be a big gamble for Burnley ahead of their Championship return.

The keeper is clearly a player with potential, though, and in a few years time, this could well look a bargain for the Clarets.

Time will be the best judge of this one, you feel.
