Football fans across the globe can scarcely believe that Huddersfield Town are 90 minutes away from a place in the Premier League.

In League Two as recently as 2004, manager David Wagner has led his side to the brink of glory, and victory will confirm Huddersfield’s place in the top flight for the first time since 1972.

Stand out performers have emerged across the team, with key stars such as Aaron Mooy, Nahki Wells and Danny Ward notable stars this season.

Another player to have greatly impressed fans and pundits alike this year is full back Tommy Smith, who was rewarded for his efforts this season with a place in the Sky Bet Championship Team of the Season.

Consistency has been key in Smith’s performances, and defensively he has been extremely impressive.

In the world of marauding full backs that we have become accustomed to, Smith has evolved his game to include this sought after characteristic, and has recorded an astonishing 4 goals and 10 assists across 42 Championship starts this season.

Stats like these do not go unnoticed, and a host of clubs will circle the player this summer, especially if Huddersfield fail to take the playoff crown at Wembley.

One club that should move for the player are Burnley, who are sure to be in the market for a full back this season.

Matt Lowton has more often than not occupied the right back berth at Turf Moor this season, but Smith would present a significant upgrade on the former Sheffield United defender.

Smith’s proven ability to roam up and down the touchline would be a dream addition to Sean Dyche’s side, and the quality of service provided by the defender would be an attractive offering when combined with the prowess of strikers Andre Gray and Sam Vokes.

Smith has a contract which runs through to 2019, so Dyche would have to find the funds to launch a bid for the player.

A Huddersfield promotion would likely scupper any deal to bring Smith to Turf Moor, but should Reading take the win on Monday, a swoop for Smith should certainly be in the summer plans of the management team at Burnley.
